Visual Overture is a media project that was initiated in autumn 2018 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and AV-arkki – the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art. The Visual Overture series presents a new media art works each month on the media wall outside the Helsinki Music Centre right before the start of the orchestra’s concerts. Visual Overture offers a new public forum for media art that also leads concert goers into the Helsinki Music Centre. The work for the media wall have thus far been selected from either Kiasma’s collection or the archives of AV-arkki.
The new work would be screened on the media wall outside the Helsinki Music Centre, the biggest digital screen in the entire Nordic region, in November-December 2020. The work would be screened approximately ten times during these two months.
The media wall can be used for 9:30 minutes, during which time the work can be screened one or more times, depending on its length.
The media wall does not have audio, so the media art work should be designed as a silent work. Since the work will be screened in a public space, it should be suitable for viewers of all ages. However, the genre and method of implementation are free.
The media art work must be a brand-new piece that has not been displayed before, and it will be used exclusively for the Visual Overture until the end of 2020. The new work will also be included in Kiasma’s collection. The work may have an edition of 3 + 1 artist’s copy.
Technical requirements for the work:
Duration: 1:30 min – 9:30 min
Technical specifications of media wall:
Width: 1080 px
Height: 1024 px
Frame rate: 25 fps
It will be considered an advantage if the size of the media art work corresponds with the size of the media wall, although it is not an absolute requirement.
Due to the location of the media wall, the images in the work must not resemble traffic signs.
