Formed in 2006, the Pushkin Quintett is a combination of a jazz trio and two classically-trained cellists. The members of this Tampere-based line-up nowadays meet mainly for gigs, so the HPO’s Encounters Club this time really lives up to its name.
At this Club session, they will play their own arrangements of well-known pieces regardless of musical genre. The stand-up-type intros by Joona Pulkkinen are also a major element of the show; sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t.

The Encounters Club meeting will feature music by Stephen Sondheim, Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand, Ennio Morricone and others.
Friday 26.4. at 21, Helsinki Music Centre, main foyer

Classical and jazz, improvisation, literature and drama meet at the spring’s last Club in a programme in which music engages in dialogue with selected texts from the Incidences collection of stories by Russian writer Daniil Kharms. Heading the list of composer names are Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. There will also be excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet performed earlier that night by the HPO.
