Amy Beach broke through several glass ceilings to succeed as a composer and pianist. Her Piano Concerto will be heard for the first time in Finland.
In 1918, composer Amy Beach wrote an article in the American magazine Etude titled ‘To the Girl Who Wants to Compose’: “Here we are touching upon perhaps the most wonderful thing of all about musical composition. It may be not only the creation of an art-form, but a veritable autobiography, whether conscious or unconscious.” In Beach’s Piano Concerto, one can hear echoes of her striving to conquer concert stages both as a composer and a pianist. The soloist for the Finnish premiere is Mackenzie Melemed, an American pianist who has settled in Finland and winner of the 2017 Maj Lind Competition.
Johannes Brahms did not dare to compose a symphony until he was in his forties. His serenades give a taste of the kind of symphonies the young Brahms might have composed.
