Encounters Club: Finnish string quartets from the 1930s

Many Finnish composers have been overshadowed by Sibelius. The string quartets of Ernst Linko and Olavi Pesonen from the 1930s are certainly less often heard chamber music pieces. Linko’s musical language often focuses on classical expressions, and he sought inspiration from baroque composers. Pesonen’s earliest works in turn represented national romanticism, but later his compositions became more chromatic and moved away from tonality in places.
