Presentation

The final Encounters Club of the spring takes audiences to the heart of Paris in 1920s, where the composers of Group des Six helped reshape the musical landscape.

In between the two World Wars, Paris became a vibrant melting pot of cultures and ideas. Cabarets, cafés and bars were filled with writers, painters, musicians and other artists eager to create a new cultural era. The city attracted some of the most influential figures of the time, from Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau to the growing community of musicians inspired by new artistic trends and the arrival of American jazz.

Among these innovators was Group des Six, a circle of young composers brought together by friendship rather than a single musical doctrine. Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc and Germaine Tailleferre sought to move away from the aesthetic ideals of German Romanticism and French Impressionism, championing instead a fresh, direct and contemporary musical language. Although united as a group, each composer cultivated a distinctive artistic voice.

This evening’s club concert brings the spirit of the Roaring Twenties to life through a modern-day “Group of Six.” Alongside a violinist, clarinettist, oboist, bassoonist and pianist, actress Cécile Orblin takes the stage, guiding the audience through the fascinating world of Paris a century ago.

Free admission – welcome! The programme begins at 9pm after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 9:45pm.
