The trio combines two similar tones with the sound of the piano: a mezzo-soprano and the “mezzo” of string instruments, the viola. Needless to say, the result is ultra-soothing to the ear!
Lotta Poijärvi, sub-principal of the viola section of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, invited her friends Jeni Packalen and Tuula Hällström to perform with her at the Encounters Club. The trio combines two similar tones with the sound of the piano: a mezzo-soprano and the “mezzo” of string instruments, the viola. Needless to say, the result is ultra-soothing to the ear!
Johannes Brahms composed Zwei Gesänge for a couple of his friends. Brahms hoped that the piece would inspire the couple to play music together and help save their troubled marriage. The plan failed, unfortunately, and the couple divorced, but posterity was left with a wonderful piece of music that is far too seldom performed.
The second piece of the evening is Frank Bridge’s moving Three Songs for Mezzo-Soprano, Viola and Piano.
Surprises are also in store!
