Esittely

At the Encounters Club, the ensemble interprets classics from the roots of jazz music.

The UMO Helsinki Ensemble is a smaller musical group assembled from the ranks of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, whose musicians have a long career both in the ranks of the UMO and in numerous individual projects. At the Encounters Club, the ensemble interprets classics from the roots of jazz music. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new style of music began in New Orleans that combined blues, ragtime and marching rhythms. This popular style of dance music eventually became known as “Dixieland”. This concert features Dixieland classics from the pioneers of that era, such as King Oliver's Snake Rag, Jelly Roll Morton's Black Bottom Stomp and Louis Armstrong's Potato Head Blues.

Musicians:
Kasperi Sarikoski, trombone and band leader

Timo Paasonen, trumpet
Mikko Mäkinen, saxophone
Hector Lepe, guitar
Nathan Francis, bass
Anssi Tirkkonen, drums

The Encounters Club is open to all and free of charge, and it takes place on Fridays around once a month in the main foyer of the Helsinki Music Centre.
Free admission – welcome! The programme begins at 9pm after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 10:30pm.
