The roots of Latin jazz trace back to the early 20th century, when Cuban musicians brought their syncopated rhythms to the United States. The genre truly rose to prominence in 1940s New York, as the improvisational freedom of jazz merged with Cuban dance rhythms, such as mambo and rumba. Later, Brazilian influences enriched the genre with the soft tones of samba and bossa nova. The result was a style of music in which rhythmic energy, strong melodies and improvisation come together in new and unique ways.
Curated by trombonist Kasperi Sarikoski, the programme showcases the diverse shades of Latin jazz, ranging from classics to rarely heard gems. Expect a warm, club-style evening where the swing of jazz meets the irresistible rhythms of Latin America.
Free admission – welcome! The programme begins at 9pm after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 9:45pm.
Yes, but only before or after the concert. During the concert we just want you to enjoy the music. This way you won’t disturb the musicians or other audience members.
Only the orchestra has a dress code. You can dress as you like.
