The popular Encounters Club is an arena for creative ideas and surprising encounters with performances by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s musicians and friends.
This year, the winter sky with its freezing cold air has for the most part avoided Helsinki. It was different at the beginning of the last century. Our next Encounters Club presents Klimatkvartetten, the “Climate Quartet”, performing Erkki Melartin’s String Trio, Op. 133, which premiered in Helsinki in 1927. At that time, the average temperature in Helsinki was 4.7 degrees Celsius. In 2024, the average temperature in our capital city was 3.1 degrees higher. The evening will continue with emergency music in the form of Franz Schubert's Erlkönig, which has been arranged for string trio. The club will end with Andrew Norman's Sabina, a call for action to protect nature and the climate. The quartet will be joined by meteorologist and non-fiction writer Kerttu Kotakorpi, who will share facts about the climate between the pieces.
This Encounters Club is dedicated to the memory of violinist Eriikka Maalismaa (1980–2024), the fourth member of Klimatkvartetten and a courageous speaker on climate issues. The club is part of Maalisvalo concert series.
Free admission – welcome! The programme begins at 9 p.m. after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 10:30 p.m.
