The sound installation Etiäisiä – Premonitions sonically introduces the opening of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s autumn season – gently immersing visitors in what's to come.
Etiäisiä – Premonitions is an electronic sound and space installation commissioned by the HPO for the foyer of the Musiikkitalo concert hall. The seeds of the sound material can be found in Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 and Anna Clyne’s new Time and Tides violin concerto.
“I recorded organist Jan Lehtola and the parts arranged by him from the final movement of Bruckner's 5th symphony, as well as parts played and sung by Pekka Kuusisto from the folk songs that can be found in the background of Clyne's Time and Tides concerto. The recordings have been modified and broadened in time and space to form a wider, more soundscape-like entity. The idea is to lead the listener into the worlds of the concert,” says sound designer/artist Tuomas Norvio.
Auditory image of the installation changes by moving in the space
When the audience arrives for a concert by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, sounds are already playing in the Musiikkitalo concert hall and the world is alive inside. The concert hall is surrounded by sound reproduction, with each speaker playing a small part of the sound material of the entire work, creating the impression of a living hall that plays while waiting for the audience.
The sound installation invites visitors to move around the foyer, to explore the space and its effect on what they hear, allowing them to define the flow and dramaturgy of the sound and play with it. The sound also rotates very slowly around the foyer.
The sound installation can be heard at Musiikkitalo at the times listed below:
