Inspired by Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s symphony AIŌN, this Encounters Club takes you on a northern journey through the centuries.
This evening’s club is inspired by the ritualism in Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, and the concept of non-linear time in Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s ‘AIŌN’. Tuomo and Mariette have curated a program full of pieces that are in some way connected with rites, originating from or inspired by the Nordic countries – ranging from Gregorian Chant of the 14th Century, baroque, various types of folk music, to contemporary works – including some songs written and arranged by the performers themselves.
The composers of the evening include Dietrich Buxtehude, Britta Byström, Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Sadie Harrison, Simón García, Krishna Nagaraja, Saint Birgitta & Saint Petrus of Skänninge, Tuomo Matero, and Mariette Reefman. The program follows its own non-linear path, jumping between centuries and genres with surprising links.
The popular Encounters Club is an arena for creative ideas and surprising encounters with performances by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s musicians and friends.
Free admission – welcome! The programme begins at 9pm after the evening’s concert, and the café is open until 9:45pm.
