Presentation

George Gershwin did not abandon his musical mother tongue when he composed his Piano Concerto – it is jazz from start to finish.

Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s acquaintance with the Gershwin Concerto began when he was 14. “It is a captivating piece that exudes pure joy and brings a smile to the lips of both the audience and the orchestra.”

Sergei Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony was premiered in Moscow in January 1945. During the performance, artillery salutes were heard celebrating the Red Army’s military success. The composer flattered Stalinist cultural propaganda by describing his symphony as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” Throughout the Allied world, this seemingly optimistic symphony was seen as a symbol of military victory, but the truth is more complicated.
