Jean Sibelius visited Koli in the autumn of 1909 and wrote in his diary: “One of the greatest experiences of my life. Plans. La Montagne.”. The vista of the Finnish mountainside later matured into his fourth symphony, which two years later was debuted by the Helsinki Philharmonic and led by none other than the composer himself. Vaughan Williams Fantasia, in which mystical cathedral sounds from centuries past and the foggy air of the British Isles can be heard, opens this concert led by conductor Dalia Stasevska. The clarinet wizard Kari Kriiku’s interpretation of Jukka Tiensuu’s Puro promises a suspenseful celebration, captivating audiences in the here and now.
