Creative Me x Sibelius

How often do I listen to Sibelius? What does Sibelius mean today?

It has been a while since the turn of the 20th century. Our dreams of independence came true; Finland today has its own Finnish-language parliament, legislation, Finnish-language universities, public agencies and media, as well as its own history of art. One could say that fighting for and highlighting our own culture was worth it.

What is the significance of Sibelius and his music today, when the role of art as an advocate for the existence of Finns is no longer as tangible as in the years before independence?

Sibelius and his music have become part of our national brand. He is one of our three big S’s: Suomi (Finland), sauna and Sibelius. Sibelius is one of the most recognised Finns abroad. Our country’s only music university, which is currently among the top ten in the world in its field, is called the Sibelius Academy. Finland’s independence celebrations are never celebrated without Sibelius’s music. Sibelius’s music has also become a staple of symphony orchestras around the world and is performed again and again.

There is something about Sibelius that his music touches people across cultural borders. So what is Sibelius’s meaning to individual people?

How often do you listen to Sibelius? What thoughts and feelings are evoked in you by Sibelius’s music? Do you have a particular piece that you like to listen to?
