Jayanthi Kumaresh

Horizon Series: Jayanthi Kumaresh

The upcoming concert of the Horizon series will feature a mesmerizing collaboration between Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh, a distinguished sixth-generation veena virtuoso, and tabla maestro Pramath Kiran, alongside musicians from the Helsinki Philharmonic. Together, they will present a program that harmoniously merges two musical traditions.

The Saraswathi veena is India's revered national instrument with deep roots in the southern regions, and tabla is celebrated across the northern landscapes, symbolizing the essence of Indian classical music. These iconic instruments will blend their melodies with an HPO ensemble including flute, oboe, bassoon, viola and cello.

Mariette Reefman, a viola player from HPO, is looking forward to the upcoming concert, as she has played in the previous Horizon concerts as well:

"It's been wonderful to have the opportunity to work with musicians from completely outside of our usual orchestral sphere and to learn about and perform their music. Getting to know the music of other countries is my favorite way to learn something of their cultures. So far we've worked with Syrian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh, the Turkish Gülistan ensemble, and in June, I look forward to working with Jayanthi Kumaresh, and this time not only learning some Indian music but also sharing some Finnish traditional music in return," Mariette Reefman says.

Throughout the concert, each instrument will take center stage in dialogues with one another, allowing audiences to appreciate the distinct textures and nuances of each. Finally, all instruments will unite for a grand finale, symbolizing the unifying power of collaboration and celebrating the beauty of musical diversity.

The Horizon concert series is a collaboration between HPO and MiklagardArts, curated by Ceyda Berk-Söderblom. The Horizon: Jayanthi Kumaresh concert will take place on June 8th at 6 PM at Paavo Hall, Musiikkitalo. Join us for a post-concert talk with Jayanthi Kumaresha and Pramath Kiran, followed by a Q&A session with the artists.
