The field of art and music is constantly re-evaluating its heritage. Whose histories and voices should be heard in concerts, what kind of music should be played and what does it have to say? What kind of stories are conveyed through music and what has been left unheard?
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s “HUOM! – History’s Unheard Orchestra Music” project sheds light on overlooked compositions and their authors. The planning has been based on the research projects “Music Researchers in Society” and “Daughters of Music” by the music research association Suoni ry, the University of Helsinki and the University of the Arts Helsinki.
Assistant Professor Susanna Välimäki is a musicologist, non-fiction writer and critic. Together with music historian Nuppu Koivisto, she is currently writing a book about Finnish composers born in the 19th century, as well as a biography of Finnish composer-violinist Agnes Tschetschulin (1859–1942). Välimäki is an assistant professor of art research at the University of Helsinki and senior lecturer in musicology. Välimäki is also known for her music-related radio and television programmes on Finnish public broadcaster YLE.
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the overture to Ingeborg von Bronsart’s opera “Jery und Bätely” at its Finnish Music Day gala concerts on 8 & 9 December.
